Peter D. Randolph
Peter's practice focuses on estate planning and probate administration. Peter works with families to plan the disposition of their assets, both during lifetime and at death, and to accomplish the optimal estate and gift tax planning for the clients through wills, inter-vivos and testamentary trusts, and other instruments. Peter also routinely drafts antenuptial agreements and postnuptial agreements. He is regularly involved in the analysis and issues of lifetime gifting programs, business succession planning, estate tax planning, and generation skipping issues.
Peter also works with families after the death of a family member to ensure that the client's wishes are achieved and that the plan they created is carried out. If appropriate, Peter also advises estate and trust beneficiaries during administration in order to maximize their own planning options relative to their share of a decedent's estate through the use of disclaimers and powers of appointment. He enjoys helping clients through tough situations and finding creative solutions to problems that clients are facing.
Additionally, Peter handles Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Peter advises clients throughout all stages of the bankruptcy proceeding; from filing the petition to discharge, including meetings with bankruptcy trustees and creditors. Peter also advises clients and negotiates with creditors on non-bankruptcy workouts to modify the debt for clients with their creditors outside of bankruptcy. He understands that most people going through bankruptcy are under a great deal of financial and emotional stress and he makes every effort to alleviate some of that burden for his clients.
Peter also counsels clients on business issues including business formation, choice of entity, purchase and sale of assets, and intellectual property.
Peter is a member of the Estates, Trusts and Probate Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar, the Estates and Trust Law Section of the Maryland Bar, and he provides pro bono services for Legal Counsel for the Elderly and the District of Columbia Bar Pro Bono Bankruptcy Program. During law school Peter worked as an Intern for Judge Rosemary M. Collyer, of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and for Judge Joan B. Lefkowitz, of the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Division.
A native New Yorker, Peter spends his spare time cheering on his Yankees and Giants.
